*_Prototype History_*
The Northern Pacific owned several series of single sheathed 50’ boxcars. The 4700 series cars were chosen for this Ultra Scale II offered. It offered a number of very unique features not modeled in O scale before. The Camel automobile end door and steel Youngstown double side doors coupled with the signature arched roof made these cars stand out in a consist. This particular car has never been offered in O scale before.
The Northern Pacific ordered 300 cars from Pacific Car & Foundry with delivery occurring in November and December 1929. The cars represented the most modern construction practices of the period. While fifty-foot all steel cars did exist they were not the norm.
The railroad used these cars in a wide variety of service ranging from automobile shipment, farm implements, finished wood products and general freight service.
The series severed the road for many years with the major of the class lasting until 1958 when scrapping started. The population was nearly gone by 1969. The January 1953 ORER showed 295 cars on the roster with only a few lost to wrecks.
The Northern Pacific Railway Historical Society “Mainstreeter” magazine Volume 23 Number 2 contains an excellent article on this unique class of cars. Back copies are available from The society at their website.
